As the game needs to have its own identity while still being "Sonic-y", there are some question about how the game should/could be done story-wise. Stories in Sonic are often a mixt between a fantasy and a science-fiction settings, with bits of both creating the story world.
PROPOSITION 1 - MOON CENTRISM
The reasonning around that is that the sun-centrism of Sonic Radiance is already present a bit in 2006 with the god of sun, Solaris and in the Rush series with the "Power of Star" + the Sol Emeralds. Making it a bit redondant.
The second reasoning is that as the island is called "Moonstone Island", a bigger moon thematics might be cool and help the game have more identity.
Some ideas that could be possible
PROPOSITION 2 - SUN VS MOON
Another possibility would be to have some "Sun vs Moon" story, with a "Sunstone Island" and a "Moonstone Island". There the two astres would be linked in the story, making it more complete, and making the Radiance name more interesting ?
Moonstone Island would have the more "older" and "colder" environnements (Ruins, Mountain, Forest)
Sunstone Island would have the more "newer" and "warmer" environnements (Plains, Beach, Big City)
Obsidian Rock could be a small Island in the see between both.
The only issue I see is that Day vs Night is already a bit done in Unleashed...

Energy and stuff
The Stygian Energy
This ancien energy comes from before matter, and have been replaced by the Chaos. It's a corruptive energy (especially for Chaos or Orgone beings), that makes them even more dangerous.
Corrupted beings become dark, with some mouth instead of a real face.
Titans
Mutated hyper-energy Chaos or Orgone beings, that become way bigger and more powerful. They can become even more powerfull by consuming energy forms. Chaos, Gaïa, the Mother Wisp and the Ifrit are all exemple of titans.
Gaïans are small earth fairy, that existed before everything else on the planet. One of them mutated to become Gaïa, and half of it became corrupted by Stygian energy.
Devourers
Ancients being that produce stygians energy. They have corrupted several titans, and can corrupt being. They tend to devour space and time, and make it lifeless and grey.
